SmartThings v2 vs. v3 — What’s Different?

Motion Sensor – While both smart hubs include motion sensor technology, SmartThings v3 offers a more upgraded option.

For example, the v3 version has a more centered sensor and a rounded design. It’s both more functional and more attractive, while v2 possesses a bulkier and its sensor is located on the upper left corner.

Additionally, SmartThings motion sensor has a more functional and efficient adjustable mount, allowing it to be easier placed around the home.

Connectivity to Router – The newer SmartThings v3 hub has more flexible options when it comes to connecting it to your router.

As it supports both a WiFi as well as an Ethernet connection, while the previous model can only connect via Ethernet only.

Range – While both SmartThings v2 & v3 have excellent coverage, SmartThings v3 has a more increased range of 50-130 ft, vs. the previous model’s 50-100 ft.

Making v3 ideal if you have a larger space to cover.

Multipurpose Sensor – The multipurpose sensors are vital for tracking events such as doors, windows or drawers closing.

While both models come with the basic features, there are some differences to note.

For example, SmartThings v3 has a stronger built-in magnet which allows it to sense doors or windows closing even when the sensors are further away from each other.

Additionally, when it comes to the installation, The v2 mainly relies on a mounting plate which is a little more tricky to install While the v3 has replaced that plate with an efficient 3M peel-and-stick installation.

Button – SmartThings v3 also includes an optional button feature, which Is inexpensive and even sports an in-built temperature sensor as well.

The button also includes up to 3 functions, which include operating smart devices such as lights, carrying different functions whenever the button is pressed once, twice or three times.

Water Leak Sensor – While both smart hubs include the water leak sensors, the newer model has some upgrades worth mentioning.

For example, SmartThings v3 includes an additional sensor located on top of the device, allowing it to alerts you when it senses water dripping down, while v2 can only sense water underneath it.

Design – The SmartThings v3 hub sports a sleek design and is slightly bigger with dimensions of 5.0″ x 5.0″ x 1.2″, compared to the previous model’s 4.2″ x 4.9″ x 1.3″ smaller measurements.

Outlet – SmartThings outlets allow you to not only control smart devices but ordinary ones too.

While both SmartThings v2 & v3 outlets are priced similarly and come with almost the same functions, the newer model features a more improved outlet with a better range & while also being smaller and lighter than the original.
